Bharat Taxi Hits the Roads: Government-Backed Cooperative Challenges Ola, Uber with Zero-Commission Model

Bharat Taxi launches as India’s government-backed cooperative ride-hailing service, challenging Ola and Uber with zero-commission fares, fixed pricing from ₹30, and Amul-inspired driver ownership

New Delhi, January 1, 2026, 2:03 PM IST – In a bold move to empower drivers and curb high commissions from private ride-hailing giants, India’s first government-backed cooperative taxi service, Bharat Taxi, officially launched today in Delhi-NCR.

Bharat Taxi Operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, the platform positions itself as a fairer alternative to Ola and Uber, drawing inspiration from the iconic Amul dairy cooperative model.

The launch comes amid growing driver discontent over steep platform fees and surge pricing, which often erode earnings. Bharat Taxi eliminates these pain points with a zero-commission structure, allowing drivers to keep 80-100% of their fares.

Fixed pricing starts at ₹30 for the first four kilometers, ₹23 per km for trips between 4-12 km, and ₹18 per km thereafter, no dynamic surges, no hidden charges.

Cooperative Roots and Leadership

Registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act in June 2025 with ₹300 crore initial capital, Bharat Taxi is supported by heavyweights like IFFCO, KRIBHCO, NAFED, NABARD, and NCDC.

Jayen Mehta, managing director of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul), chairs the venture, bringing proven expertise from one of India’s largest farmer-owned cooperatives.

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah hailed the initiative during its parliamentary announcement, stating,

“Profits will not go to any big industrialist but will go solely to the drivers of the vehicles.”

Over 51,000 drivers have already registered following pilot tests, with the app now live on Android and iOS.

Robust Safety and User Features

Safety takes center stage with mandatory driver verification linked to Delhi Police databases, real-time GPS tracking, an emergency SOS button, and 24/7 multilingual customer support. Vehicle options span non-AC economy cabs to premium AC and XL variants, catering to diverse needs in a city notorious for traffic and pollution woes.

The rollout aligns with Delhi’s environmental push. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa simultaneously directed Ola, Uber, and Rapido to revive ridesharing and carpooling within a month, features paused during the COVID-19 pandemic due to infection fears.

Ambitious Expansion Ahead

Bharat Taxi eyes rapid growth, targeting Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Bhopal, Lucknow, and Jaipur next, with a vision for 20 cities and 100,000 drivers by 2030. Proponents argue this model could reshape urban mobility, fostering financial inclusion for lakhs of drivers while offering affordable, reliable rides to passengers.

As Ola and Uber face regulatory scrutiny over commissions and data privacy, Bharat Taxi’s cooperative ethos signals a potential shift toward people-owned transport in India’s booming gig economy.
