Escalating Tensions Ignite AI Ethics Battle
President Donald Trump ordered all federal agencies on February 27, 2026, to stop using Anthropic products, posting on Truth Social that the US does not need or want the company’s technology. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth followed by designating Anthropic a supply chain risk on March 5, barring defence contractors from commercial activity with the firm.
The moves stemmed from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s refusal to drop safeguards blocking Claude’s use for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons.
Amodei called these non-negotiable “red lines” in a blog post, stating the company could not accept the demands even at the cost of government contracts.
Four senators urged Hegseth and Amodei to extend negotiations beyond the Pentagon’s deadline. Anthropic plans to challenge the designation in court, arguing it legally protects only government use and cannot broadly penalize suppliers.
Claude’s Meteoric Rise to App Store Dominance
Claude rocketed from outside the top 100 to No. 1 on the US Apple App Store by February 28, overtaking ChatGPT and holding the spot into early March. Sensor Tower data shows Claude climbed through the top 20 in February, surging amid the dispute. It also topped charts in Canada, Germany, Ireland, and Luxembourg.
Anthropic executive Mike Krieger announced on X that Claude added over one million new users daily, breaking sign-up records every day since early last week. Free user growth exceeded 60 percent since January.

Users reacted harshly: ChatGPT uninstalls spiked 295 percent day-over-day on February 28, with one-star reviews up 775 percent. Downloads fell 13 percent Saturday and 5 percent Sunday; website visits dropped 16-17 percent. Claude downloads rose up to 51 percent in response.
Industry Pushback and Uncertain Horizon
Amazon, Nvidia, and other tech giants warned against the supply chain label in a letter, calling it a response to a procurement dispute. Legal analysts note such designations target foreign adversaries and may not hold up, limited to DoD contracts.
