Can Balen Shah Really Become Prime Minister?
Despite the overwhelming public buzz, Balen Shah faces serious constitutional hurdles. Under Nepal’s parliamentary system, the Prime Minister must be a member of parliament, elected by lawmakers and backed by party consensus. Balen Shah, as a city mayor and an independent, does not currently meet this criterion.
Legal experts warn that unless he forms or joins a political party and wins parliamentary seats, his path to the premiership remains blocked. Still, analysts argue that his influence—whether or not he takes the top job—is already reshaping Nepal’s political discourse.
