Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System with the full 82 km Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor operational. He flagged off the Meerut Metro from Shatabdi Nagar station in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, marking the nation’s fastest metro service. The projects, worth Rs 12,930 crore, integrate rapid rail and metro on shared infrastructure for seamless travel.
Accompanied by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Modi rode the metro to Meerut South station before addressing a public rally. Services began at 6 pm, covering end-to-end journeys in under 60 minutes across 16 stations.

Corridor Completion Details
The event activated the final 5 km stretch from Sarai Kale Khan to New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and 21 km from Meerut South to Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh. Sarai Kale Khan serves as a multi-modal hub linking Nizamuddin railway station, Delhi Metro Pink Line, ISBT, and Ring Road. Other new stations include Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram, all offering Namo Bharat and metro services.
Phased rollout started with Sahibabad-Duhai in October 2023, extended to Modinagar in March 2024, Meerut South in August 2024, and New Ashok Nagar in January 2025. Six platforms support future links to Delhi-Alwar and Delhi-Karnal corridors.

Meerut Metro Features
The 23 km Meerut Metro spans 13 stations from Meerut South to Modipuram, completing in 30 minutes at a max speed of 120 kmph. It outpaces Delhi Airport Express Line’s 110 kmph, using Namo Bharat tracks in a unique shared setup. Meerut joins five Uttar Pradesh cities with metro networks.
Namo Bharat trains hit 180 kmph design speed and 160 kmph operational, with reclining seats, charging ports, vending machines, and women-only coaches. QR code ticketing enables cashless entry.
Broader Vision and Impact
Modi highlighted women dominating train operations and station roles on the system. The single-platform launch previews integrated transit for a developed India. Connectivity boosts NCR mobility, with Meerut as the fifth UP metro city.
