Early Life and Education
Sunita Williams was born to Dr. Deepak Pandya, an Indian-American neuroanatomist, and Bonnie Pandya, a Slovene-American. She grew up in Needham, Massachusetts, as the youngest of three siblings. After graduating from Needham High School in 1983, she pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Science from the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1987. Later, she earned a Master of Science in Engineering Management from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1995.
Military Career
Williams began her career as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in May 1987. She trained as a Naval Aviator and specialized in H-46 Sea Knight helicopters. Her assignments included overseas deployments during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Provide Comfort. She also led relief efforts during Hurricane Andrew in 1992. In 1993, she graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School and served as a test pilot for rotary-wing aircraft.
NASA Career
Sunita Williams was selected as an astronaut by NASA in June 1998. Her training included shuttle systems, International Space Station (ISS) operations, and survival techniques. She quickly became one of NASA’s most experienced astronauts.
