India Canada Uranium Deal 2026: Prime Ministers Modi and Carney held key talks in New Delhi, securing a $2.6 billion uranium supply deal with Cameco, defence dialogue launch, and $50 billion trade target by 2030. Explore the full reset of India-Canada ties after Nijjar crisis.

Diplomatic Background
India and Canada endured strained relations since September 2023, when then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian agents of involvement in the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, Canada. India rejected the claims as baseless and politically motivated, leading to mutual diplomat expulsions and suspended trade negotiations.
Mark Carney became Canada’s Prime Minister in March 2025 after winning the Liberal Party leadership and a federal election in April, succeeding Trudeau. Initial steps toward reconciliation included Modi’s attendance at the G7 in Kananaskis in June 2025 and G20 talks in Johannesburg in November 2025.

Carney’s India Visit Details
Carney’s four-day visit began February 27, 2026, in Mumbai, where he met CEOs, industry leaders, innovators, educators, and Canadian pension fund representatives. He shifted to New Delhi on March 1 for the highlight: delegation-level talks with Modi at Hyderabad House on March 2.
The leaders also attended the reconstituted India-Canada CEOs Forum to boost private sector ties in trade, investment, and supply chains. Carney departed afterward for Australia, extending an invitation for Modi to visit Canada.

Key Agreements and Deals
The talks produced a landmark C$2.6 billion ($1.9 billion) uranium supply contract between India’s government and Cameco Corp., delivering 22 million pounds from 2027 to 2035 to fuel India’s nuclear reactors amid its 100 GW capacity goal by 2047.
Additional pacts include MoUs on critical minerals cooperation, renewable energy promotion (LNG, solar, hydrogen), and cultural exchange. Leaders committed to concluding a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by end-2026, targeting bilateral trade growth from current levels to $50 billion by 2030.

Defence and Security Advances
India and Canada launched a new Defence Dialogue to enhance cooperation in defence industries, maritime domain awareness, military exchanges, and Indo-Pacific stability. Plans cover joint exercises, training, and a General Security of Information Agreement.
Modi highlighted growing defence and security ties as evidence of mutual trust. Carney noted shared challenges like terrorism and extremism require joint action for global peace.
Future Outlook
Both leaders hailed the outcomes as elevating ties to a “next level partnership.” Carney called India a “powerhouse of global commerce and technology,” while Modi praised Carney’s role in revival. The deals signal economic momentum post-crisis, with focus on energy security and innovation.
