JNU scholar Dr. Shubh Gupta delivered a lecture at Delhi University on AI in journalism, stressing ethical use, accountability, and critical engagement with technology.
New Delhi, September 25, 2025: Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming newsrooms worldwide, but its adoption must be guided by responsibility and ethics. This was the central message of a lecture delivered by Dr. Shubh Gupta, faculty at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), at the Delhi School of Journalism (DSJ), University of Delhi, on Thursday.
Speaking on the theme “AI as a Learning Partner: Opportunities and Responsibilities in Journalism,” Dr. Gupta highlighted how AI in journalism can enhance efficiency, creativity, and audience engagement, while also raising urgent questions about accountability, bias, and digital inequality.
“Journalists must learn to adopt AI critically—using it to strengthen the profession rather than surrendering to it blindly,” Dr. Gupta said, emphasizing the need for informed integration of emerging technologies in AI in journalism.

AI as Opportunity and Challenge
Dr. Gupta, whose academic expertise spans Computer Science, Sociology, and a Ph.D. on the social impacts of AI, offered an interdisciplinary perspective on the subject. Drawing from his doctoral fieldwork in Delhi schools, he explained how AI is already influencing education and shaping social behavior, and how similar dynamics are emerging in newsrooms through AI in journalism.
He also referred to his recent report on the Delhi education model, an argument from which was notably cited by the Hon’ble Prime Minister during ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’.

Engaging Students in Debate
The lecture sparked an engaging Q&A session with students, who raised questions about algorithmic bias, the role of human judgment, and the future of editorial decision-making in an AI-driven media ecosystem. Dr. Gupta encouraged students to view AI in journalism not as a threat but as a partner—one that demands vigilance, ethical responsibility, and critical engagement.
